e-Commerce
When people can communicate with each other, they soon realise they can sell things to each other. It is no different on the World Wide Web. People could communicate with each other all over the world and they wanted to sell things to one another, sending things to all parts of the world. The web makes this possible and it became known as e-Commerce.
There were a few obstacles to overcome first. Not least of these obstacles was how to make payments over the web. The use of credit cards was an obvious first step but how would they be used? In the beginning people emailed their orders for goods and credit card details to the online vendor, but this was not very secure. Emails could be intercepted and sometimes people just typed-in the email address incorrectly and sent their details to some unsuspecting person.
The next innovation was to add order forms to web pages where shoppers could enter their orders and credit card details and submit them to the vendor. This involved some proper programming and the interface of the web page with the programming language and a database. This was better but still not always secure, but this was soon corrected and the ability to make secure payments became the norm.
E-Commerce websites are a normal part of the World Wide Web landscape and drive a good proportion of the economy. If every traditional shop does not have a web e-Commerce presence then they will find that they will be left behind.
